The 1969 Pontiac 428 HO engine, with engine code XF, was factory rated at 390 horsepower @ 5200 RPM and 465 lb-ft of torque @ 3400 RPM.

However, these ratings were underrated by GM for insurance and marketing reasons. Independent testing and real-world performance suggest that the true horsepower output was closer to 420–440 gross horsepower, especially considering the engine’s components and how it performed in period road tests.
